Eagles News · MCPS and Athletics -Events Cancelled through April 24th and Computer Distribution plan

Good evening SV Community,

We hope that this email finds everyone well and safe.

Please see below for important updates regarding MCPS athletics as well as VERY important information on computer distribution for online learning.

As most of you are aware, the Governor has ordered schools to be closed through April 24th. We are aware that this will have a major impact on athletics and more importantly on academics for your student athletes.

In regards to athletics:  Per previous announcements, all athletic events, practices and organized gatherings are cancelled through April 24th. It is important that all stakeholders involved continue to practice social distancing and help flatten the curve of the Covid 19 virus. This includes, but is not limited to, meeting at local parks, gathering on fields or courts, and meeting as large groups.  We, as much as everyone else, have a desire to get back to our normal routine, however, it is important to follow the guidelines in order to enable this to happen.

We are aware that our student athletes have a strong desire to return to action and get their seasons started. Many questions are being asked and it is important to point out that we as an athletic staff are desiring the same.  However, at this point we can only follow the guidelines set in place. We promised to continue to keep you in the loop as new information arises.

Regarding online learning. Please see below the message sent out by Dr. Cohen earlier this afternoon. Please make sure to take advantage of this.

Dear Seneca Valley High School Students, Parents, or Guardians:

I hope that you are doing well and have settled into our new reality.  As you know by now, all Maryland public schools will remain closed until at least April 24, 2020.  Consequently, all MCPS school buildings will be closed during this time.  Additional information will be shared with the MCPS community soon about the continuity of learning plans, school calendar adjustments, state exams, course requirements, and much more, including graduation requirement information for the class of 2020.  You should visit the MCPS website frequently for the most up-to-date information.

Due to the ongoing COVID-19 crisis and the extended school closure through April 24, 2020, MCPS will be offering students who do not have a computer or laptop at home an opportunity to pick up a Chromebook from MCPS school sites to access instruction from home.

Seneca Valley High School (SVHS) will distribute Chromebooks to students in need of one on Thursday, March 26th, from 8:00 am – 11:00 am. Please check your emails for important information from MCPS about this process.

This distribution site will only be for students who attend Seneca Valley High School. Families with students in multiple MCPS schools should refer to the district email sent today and will need to go to their designated school pick up locations for non-SVHS younger siblings.  We simply do not have enough Chromebooks to provide them for the entire Seneca Valley cluster.  Students who already received tablets through the Sprint 1Million grant can use this technology instead of a Chromebook.

Drive-Through Pick Up

We urge families to drive.  All vehicles must enter the SVHS campus from Crystal Rock Drive.  The traffic flow will be directed by designated staff members.  Upon entering the bus loop from Crystal Rock Drive, you will pull forward when you can, approaching the front doors to the school.  Please have your student ID numbers written on an 8×11 piece of paper, big enough so that staff can read it through car windows and from 6 feet away. There will be tables set up to distribute Chromebooks.  Students do not need to be present in the car to receive a device.  A parent can pick up for multiple children who attend SVHS by providing their student ID numbers.  Parents and students will not be permitted to leave their vehicles at any time.

We strongly encourage students and parents to drive-up.  However, if a vehicle is not accessible, we will provide Chromebooks to walk-ups via a designated area in front of the school. Walk-ups should also have their student ID numbers written clearly on an 8×11 piece of paper.  We ask walk-ups to wait at a socially responsible distance of at least six feet from the next person in line.  Once the student ID is provided, a Chromebook will be distributed. Students/parents must leave campus immediately and maintain CDC social distancing guidelines throughout.

Slowing the spread of COVID-19 requires everyone to follow the guidance of health officials. An important piece of this effort is social distancing. This means avoiding gathering in groups of more than 10 and keeping a safe distance from others in the group. We ask those picking up Chromebooks follow all social distancing guidance provided by the CDC and federal, state and local health officials.

Information about obtaining free internet service can be found by clicking the link below.

As a reminder, the Chromebooks are for students who do not currently have a device at home.

Thank you for your continued support and partnership during this uncertain time. We are a strong school community and will work together on behalf of our students and families.
